The Kindli is located literally in the heart of Zurich. It was here, where the developement of the city began and predecessors of today's building may have already stood over 2000 years ago. Accourding to historic sources, wine was served in the Kindli more than 600 years ago, and by the 1460's at the latest, it had become a proper inn. This makes the Kindli one of the oldest inns in Zurich and one of the few dating back as far as the middle ages.

Beginning in Roman times, the Kindli was positioned on an axis between sacred and secular centres - directly between a temple and a fort on the Lindenhof. In the Middle Ages, St.Peter's Church, the oldest parish church in Zurich, was build on the ruinesof the temple, while a Königspfalz, or imperial palace, was built on the site of the Roman fort. The route leading past the Kindli became the Königsweg - the Royal Road - ridden along by the Emperor and princes with their entourages on the way to the palace. Every day, carriages and market waggons ratteld past the Kindli. Hooves clattered, coachmen cursed. Meanwhile, on holy days, the procession of faithful moved slowly along the Pfalzgasse up to the Lindenhof.

Many exceptionel and notable personalities have lived in the Haus zum Kindli itself over the centuries - drawn by the special aura of the building in this location steeped in history.
